I always try to stray from the color yellow, when it comes to anything I wear. It’s a tough color to wear for my skin tone; in fact for most Asians with an olive complexion. It makes me look pale and “sick” looking. However, it’s been the “it” color for the current fall season and I wanted “in” on this trend. Supposedly, yellow is the new pink!
How do I address this popular color that is suitable for me? Well, I tried a few shades of yellow, from pale to mustard. I found what works best are saturated shades of yellow, like acid or neon yellows.
This sweater I’m wearing has a vibrant citrus hue that compliments me well. It’s made in the softest cashmere yarn, so something you won’t see often in very bright colors. The natural fibers of this material takes this shade beautifully. Since I’m trying a new color, I kept the silhouette very basic in a soft crew neck and flat jersey knit, letting it be about the color. It’s best to be subtle when you’re trying something new. Ease it in baby!
I bought these menswear inspired cargo pants from Opening Ceremony and couldn’t wait to style it. The contrast top stitching creates tons of subtle details. All I’ve been seeing are cargo pockets coming down the runway in the latest Spring/Fall Europe fashion shows. I seriously haven’t worn cargos since 2008. If you still have them in your closet, keep them! They are back and will be everywhere by next Spring 2018.
The outfit is accessorized with a printed skull scarf, similar to Alexander McQueen’s version. I needed a piece that ties in perfectly with this outfit. I threw in a black wool hat to continue to pull in the popular menswear trend, happening this fall. The black ankle booties works well by adding texture with the mix of mesh and leather, which I’ve continuously styled here and here.
- For the colors you don’t feel strongly about, try out different shades and vibrancies. You might find something that’ll work for you.
- Another way to address a color trend that you may be a fan of is to try it on a piece of jewelry, printed scarf with a bit of that color, a pair of heels or even a shade of nail polish. It doesn’t have to always be a piece of clothing.
I honestly thought I’d never wear yellow, until finally it became a trend again. Never say never, right? Is there a shade you’re afraid to try? Comment below and let me help.
