MAXIMALIST Vs. minimalist
For many seasons, minimilism has been showing on the runway in Paris to New York City, from designer houses of Celine, The Row, Helmut Lang, Calvin Klein and many more. Minimalism in fashion defines a trend with simple clean lines focusing in shape and silhouette, keeping in mind the statement “less is more”. The color palette is muted with neutrals in black, white, grey, camel, and navy accented with softer pops of color.
Most recently thanks to Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s new creative director, is “maximizing” the fashion world with ornate and quirky feminine details. He’s revolutionizing the industry and giving the much needed shock effect for the brand. Within two months after the women’s Spring collection, everyone wanted to wear the clothes. Embellished styling has been in and out of the fashion industry. The trend was last seen in everyone’s closet about seven years ago. I can say after watching the MAXIMALIST trend for the last two seasons, it’s safe to say go out to vintage shops and pick up your favorite shiny pieces, because this trend is going to the max!
For me personally, I lean more towards the minimalist style but you can’t help ignore what’s going on with the fashion world. As much as I love simpler pieces, I do appreciate some bling in my wardrobe. Who doesn’t like a little sparkle?
I’ve put together an outfit that’s inspired by the current maximalist trend, with a crushed velvet embellished sheath dress from Laundry. I had this piece when I used to freelance design at the company, so it’s not on sale anymore. However, here’s something similar. I’ve been waiting for the trend to return and wear this piece again someday. It has multi colored hand beading allover the front and back of the dress. You can see the amount of time and handwork that was put into it. It’s one of my favorite pieces in my closet and couldn’t find a reason to let it go!
I paired it back with a basic fitted black turtle neck to keep it a day-to-evening look. The shoes are Jimmy Choo “Lang” Sandal in army green. These are definitely an investment piece that I can wear back with many other outfits, like the time I wore it on my “What to wear on Lunar New Year?” post. The bag is from Celine Tri Color Soft Leather Trio Zip Chain Clutch, currently on sale at resell websites only. The winter colors of the clutch compliments the dress and sandals. I’ve used it another time for a friend’s wedding on this post. I’m just excited that I get to reuse my pieces over and over again!
